Visit Topeka and Sunflower State Games are pleased to announce that the games will remain in the Capital City through 2019.
Visit Topeka recently was awarded the bid to continue hosting the games in Topeka 2017-2019.
“Topeka has the facilities and community support to make the games successful,” said Mike Bell, vice president of sales for Visit Topeka. “As the Capital City, Topeka is the ideal location for the Sunflower State Games.”
2016 is the 15th year for the annual amateur sports festival in Topeka. This year’s first registration deadline is Friday and competitions begin July 8. Kansans of all ages and ability levels are invited to participate in 49 different sports.
During two weekends of competition, Topeka sees a positive economic impact of $1.5 million and 800 hotel room nights from athletes, their families and supporters of the Sunflower State Games.
Competition events requiring July 1 registration are the 5K/10K Cauldron Run, baseball, BMX, CrossFit, Cycling, Disc Golf, FootGolf, Horseshoes, Indoor Soccer, Judo, Martial Arts, Slow-pitch Softball, Sporting Clays, Table Tennis, Target Archery, Tennis, Track & Field, Trap & Skeet Shooting, Volleyball and Wrestling.
Since moving to Topeka in 2002, the games have averaged 7,300 athletes per year. In 2015, 355 communities were represented by more than 8,200 participants.
“We are extremely excited about remaining in Topeka for the next three years. This city has embraced our event and supports our mission at the highest level,” said Executive Director Mitch Gross. “We are looking forward to continuing our relationship with Visit Topeka, our sponsors, facilities and volunteers. It’s their contributions that make the Sunflower State Games a viable option for our participants.”
The 2016 games conclude July 24. Topeka also will host the Kansas Senior Games this September. More information is available at http://www.SunflowerGames.com.
