Invitations to Listen

Rachel Epp Buller’s art invites you to slow down, ground yourself in the here and now, and listen. For Buller, listening ideally encompasses the whole body. It can be an act of intentionality and care that facilitates an embodied connection to a place and time.
The artworks presented in Invitations to Listen spring from a fellowship Buller completed in 2022 as the Fulbright Canada Research Chair in Arts, Humanities, and Culture at the University of Alberta. Daily walks were a crucial part of her process of getting to know the region. The artworks in this exhibition are responses to her experience of connecting with her surroundings during her listening walks.
The exhibition offers entry points for thinking about Washburn University’s 2023 WUmester theme of health and healing. Buller’s art suggests that mindful movement and attentive listening could present important pathways toward healing our bodies, minds, relationships with each other, and connection to the natural world.
