Cruisin' The Capitol Car Show

The name may give away the main activity, but there is so much more to Cruisin’ the Capitol than one may realize at first glance. This annual event brings hundreds of cars, trucks and motorcycles to the Downtown Capitol Loop for the past eight years. This car show is unique for many reasons, including that it is open to all makes, models, years and styles. In fact, it is not unusual to spy multiple variations of classic muscle cars, souped-up rides, vintage roadsters and more!

As a highly anticipated event, competitors begin entering the show months in advance but there is always a line that stretches several long city blocks of auto enthusiasts waiting to enter the event area to pick their favorite spots. Whether they are looking for shade, proximity to food trucks or music – every spot offers a beautiful backdrop of the Kansas Statehouse. While in line, drivers like to show off their engine’s decibels with a few quick revs.

Once in, all vehicles park facing the street and most lift their hoods to give onlookers a peek at the engines. Some like to add a bit to their showmanship by adding props like lights, sparkles, their previous awards, and in one case even a skeleton! Thousands of members from our city and surrounding communities will walk the streets to take in the sight of all the cars, trucks, and motorcycles – maybe even a tank – as the sun sets. Many will spark up a conversation with the owners who are more than willing to answer any questions about the history and restoration of
their vehicles.

To quench the thirst of attendees after they have made their way into the event, there are several beverage tents offering beer, soda, and water. Since no downtown event is really complete without the offerings of our favorite food trucks, be sure to stop by and grab a signature dish from one of the many offerings available. Then you can just follow the music to hear a live performance in front of the Celtic Fox as part of the Second Saturday Concerts that always corresponds with Cruisin’ the Capitol. Hear from a few local bands as you enjoy your meal.

Before the event ends, some special entries will receive their badges of honor as winners of several categories. One will pick up “Farthest Traveled,” another for “Ladies’ Choice,” then there is “Best Car,” “Best Truck” and “Best of Show.” As an organizer, one that brings us the most fun is enlisting the help of a local police sergeant to help pick “Most Likely to Get Pulled Over.”
As dusk falls, the cars begin warming their engines for the cruise. Cars will drive around the route showing off the cars, their sound systems, and revving their engines. Lowriders like to show off their hydraulic suspensions during this time too. In the glow of dusk, this offers a great time to catch photos of your favorite rides as they pass by. This family friendly (pets too!) annual event drives thousands to our downtown area to enjoy the vehicles, food and entertainment each year.
