Discover the DoPiKa Project: Honoring Native Heritage in Topeka
The DoPiKa Project is a unique collaborative initiative in Topeka, Kansas, uniting businesses, organizations, and individuals in a shared mission to honor the five native nations and allottees who ceded land that now comprises Shawnee County and the city of Topeka. More than just an organization, the DoPiKa Project embodies a commitment to meaningful action and education through Land Acknowledgement.
Under the guidance of 785 Arts LLC, a Native-owned organization recognized by the Department of the Interior, the DoPiKa Project facilitates engaging discussions among participants to establish themes, coordinate events, and promote awareness.
Our Themes:
History: Acknowledging the native origins of our community is essential. The DoPiKa Project is dedicated to educating the public about this often-overlooked history. We have developed a traveling historical exhibit and are creating curriculum notes for schools, pamphlets, and books to ensure that these vital narratives are shared widely.
Art: Art is the heartbeat of native culture, and the DoPiKa Project celebrates this through collaborations with local art organizations and galleries. We host exhibits, murals, and art challenges that showcase the creativity and resilience of native artists.
Endless Possibilities: The DoPiKa Project is committed to exploring a wide range of initiatives, from street signs that honor our heritage to landback transactions that promote justice and healing.
Join us in this transformative journey as we celebrate and acknowledge the rich native history of Topeka. Together, we can create a vibrant community that honors the past while inspiring future generations.
