John Cantrell Win

Topeka,

I didn’t come to you as a success story.
I came to you broken.

I came out of federal prison with a past that should have defined me forever. A man who, by all accounts, deserved to be counted out. But instead of closing your doors, you opened them.

I landed at Mirror Inc. halfway house at 25th and California. That’s where my second chance began. Not with comfort. Not with certainty. But with hope.

And somewhere along the way, in this city, I met the love of my life, my wife, Tayler. Topeka didn’t just give me a fresh start… it gave me a family.

Then came opportunity.

At Ernest Spencer Metals, a man saw something in me that I couldn’t yet see in myself. He took a chance on me when I didn’t deserve one. That chance turned into growth. That growth turned into purpose. I worked, I failed, I learned, and by the grace of God, I rose.

From there, Topeka kept showing up for me.

With my friends at Topeka Auto Glass, we built something real. Something successful. Something we were proud of. And after moving on to my next adventure, this city didn’t stop giving - it multiplied the opportunities.

Topeka didn’t just give me a job, or cheer me on as a champion…
It gave me a voice.

But the greatest gift this city gave me… was purpose.

At Central Park Christian Church, I found a place to grow spiritually and serve. In the Shawnee County Jail, I found a mission standing in front of men and women who are exactly where I once was, telling them there’s still hope. That Jesus Christ can rewrite any story.

Because He rewrote mine.

And then there’s boxing.

Topeka…you didn’t just watch me fight. You fought with me. From Kansas Heavyweight Champion… to Missouri… to Midwest… to American… to North American Champion… every punch I threw carried your belief behind it. Every win belongs to this city as much as it does to me.

But even all of that… doesn’t compare to this:

My son, Cooper.

A special needs child who has faced more in his young life than most ever will. And yet everywhere we go in this city, people don’t stare… they don’t judge…

They love him.

They know his name.
They celebrate his victories.
They embrace him for exactly who he is.

Topeka, you didn’t just accept my son…
You championed him.

And that tells me everything I need to know about who you are.

John Cantrell & Family

You are a city of second chances.
A city of grit.
A city of faith.
A city that sees people not for where they’ve been…but for who they can become.

I should have been forgotten, locked up, and had the key thrown away.

But instead…
You made me a champion.

And for that, I will spend the rest of my life giving back to you, serving you, fighting for you, and loving you.

Topeka, I owe you everything.

With gratitude, humility, and love,
